Good morning. It's Wednesday, March 18, 2026. The forecast is officially: get out of your chair and into your community. Whether you are craving fresh trails, fresh scripts, or a fresh coat of paint on a beloved hangout, the vibe is momentum. Alright, here's today's edition of your local lowdown:
📰 LOCAL NEWS LOWDOWN
Dirt, Turns, and Big Trail Dreams
Eugene and the Eugene Parks Foundation are teaming up to turn Susan Arlie Park into a world-class place to get dusty. The Lane County site, just south of Lane Community College, is slated for about eight miles of trails, including mountain-bike-specific routes. The project has more than $4 million in support, including a $1.2 million federal grant and nearly $991,000 from state parks. Opening is targeted for October or November.
Newport Gets a Fresh Pour Plan
Newport's Bayfront is not staying quiet for long. Claim 52, the Eugene brewery led by owner Jeremiah Marsden, is taking over the former Rogue Bayfront Public House after it closed in November following a bankruptcy by Rogue's parent company. Marsden aims for an early May opening after simple updates like paint and new branding. The new spot also plans to bring familiar faces back by hiring many former Rogue staff.
Write It Fast, Then Perform It
If you have ideas and a pulse, DOTS wants you. Devising Original Theatre Springfield is hosting its fourth annual Playwright's Playground Festival on April 10-11 at The Judy, a Springfield Little Theatre education building. Teams get a secret prompt, then have 24 hours to write and rehearse an original 10- to 15-minute piece before performing for an audience. Gretchen Teague calls it "fast and furious" fun.
